BBP condemns alleged assassination attempt on Lt. Yerima, demands thorough probe
The Beyond Barracks Project, BBP, an organisation focused on the rights and welfare of military families, has condemned the alleged assassination attempt on Lieutenant Yerima, the Naval officer recently involved in a public confrontation with the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement released Monday in Kaduna, the group’s Executive Director, Mohammed Thompson, said the BBP was “deeply disturbed” by reports suggesting that the officer came under threat shortly after the high-profile incident.
Thompson cautioned that any attempt to intimidate or harm a serving member of the Armed Forces constitutes “a direct challenge to Nigeria’s sovereignty,” warning that such actions could inflame national tension and damage morale within the military.
“We condemn, in the strongest terms, any act of violence, intimidation, or targeted harassment against serving military personnel,” the statement read.
“These officers risk their lives daily for the peace and unity of our country, and any attack on them is an attack on the nation.”
The organisation urged security agencies to immediately open a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine those responsible for the alleged plot, insisting that prosecutions must follow, regardless of rank, influence, or political ties.
“No individual is above the law,” Thompson stressed. “Failure to act decisively could trigger unnecessary unrest and further erode public confidence in the Armed Forces.”
BBP also noted that the incident had created unease within military circles and called for prompt action to prevent further escalation.
The advocacy group reaffirmed its support for Yerima and pledged to continue championing the welfare and protection of Nigerian military families.
