Benue: Defence Chief Advocates Strategic Change To Tackle Violence

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called for a strategic change and increased collaboration with state governors to address the ongoing violence in several parts of the country.

Speaking in Yelewata Community following a series of attacks by suspected herders, General Musa outlined plans to prevent further incidents and urged Nigerians to support the security forces as they work to restore peace and tranquillity.

General Musa highlighted the essential role of unity among the military, community stakeholders, traditional rulers, and clan leaders in combating insurgency.

He stressed that a collective effort is imperative not only to safeguard lives but also to foster a secure environment for future growth.

Additionally, he encouraged the nation’s youth to remain resilient and to uphold their commitment to the country.

The Chief of Defence Staff extended his condolences to the Governor and the people of Benue State for the recent tragic loss of life, emphasizing that measures were already underway to enhance security in the wake of these attacks.

In a related development, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of personnel to reclaim extensive territories in Benue State that have fallen under the control of armed bandits.

This decision followed a meeting with Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, during the IGP’s visit to the state capital, Makurdi.

At the meeting, the IGP reiterated his condolences to the Governor and the affected families, assuring that the police force is fully committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

He also underscored the vital need for cooperation with state authorities to restore lasting peace. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has similarly affirmed his administration’s determination to curb criminal activities nationwide.

Following their meetings, the IGP and the Governor reaffirmed their commitment to a collaborative approach to tackling the security challenges facing Benue State. Later, a joint security team proceeded to Yelewata, the border town between Benue and Nasarawa States, to join General Musa in reinforcing measures aimed at bolstering security and stability in the region.

These coordinated efforts reflect a broader commitment by Nigeria’s security leadership to address the root causes of regional violence and to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all communities.
